About Higher Ground Drug Rehabilitation Trust

Higher Ground Drug Rehabilitation Trust, also known as Higher Ground Papa Taumata, is an established Auckland addiction treatment provider supporting adults affected by severe alcohol and drug dependence. Founded in 1984, the charitable trust offers an intensive 18-week residential programme alongside outpatient support and continuing care. Treatment is grounded in a therapeutic community model, where residents participate in a structured daily routine and support one another as they develop practical recovery skills. The programme combines evidence-based therapies with 12-Step principles, individual responsibility, relapse prevention and the Te Whare Tapa Whā model of wellbeing. Higher Ground places strong emphasis on connection, cultural identity and whānau participation. Tikanga Māori is woven into treatment through practices such as karakia, waiata, kapa haka and te reo Māori, while family therapy and facilitated whānau groups help loved ones understand addiction and take part in the healing process. Located on Te Atatū Peninsula, the residential community provides gardens, walking areas and shared recreation spaces in a setting that balances structure with compassion. Residents can access individual and group counselling, AA and NA meetings, and ongoing community-based assistance as they prepare to return to everyday life.

Tena koutou katoa, ko Stacee-Jaye ahau he tangata taru kino me inu waipiro kaiwarawara ahau. He paetahi nui ahau o Te Papa Taumata. I came into Papa Taumata with an aspiration to work the programme and I had reserved motives of doing it my way, I realised it got lonely for me at the point after I was flying under the radar, holding negative power in the house, not holding my peers accountable, and behaving as if anti-social behaviour wasn't going to have an impact in all aspects of my recovery. It was a timely experience learning new ways to do everything all over again literally from scratch, I took risks I never thought would be hard to manage with control issues, vulnerability, boundaries, relationships in general, trust, and honesty. By the time I graduated I had being dreading my last month leading up to the end of it, fear of discharge, fear of failure. I'm grateful to all the staff of Papa Taumata for their forceful efforts that have changed my behaviour and attitude towards a different life moving forward. Nga mihi Stacee-Jaye.
