Southern Highlands Addiction Retreat
About Southern Highlands Addiction Retreat
Southern Highlands Addiction Retreat is a private residential rehabilitation centre set within 100 acres of countryside in Canyonleigh, New South Wales. Surrounded by national parks and located under two hours by road from Sydney and Canberra, the retreat offers a peaceful, discreet alternative to a hospital-style treatment environment. Its small residential community, private ensuite rooms and extensive grounds give guests space to step away from everyday triggers and focus on recovery. The programme combines evidence-based addiction treatment with a holistic wellness model built around physical health, mental health, spiritual wellbeing and positive social connection. Individual counselling, therapist-led groups, family work and addiction education are supported by approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy, motivational interviewing, mindfulness and relapse prevention. Treatment can address substance use, behavioural addictions and co-occurring concerns including anxiety, depression and trauma. Daily life follows a structured rhythm designed to restore healthy habits. Mornings may begin with exercise and a community check-in, while the weekly schedule includes individual therapy, group sessions, reflective evening practices and creative activities. Yoga, meditation, art, time in nature and chef-prepared meals complement clinical care, with optional AA or NA meetings available for guests who value 12-step support. Recreation is an active part of the experience, with swimming, tennis, fitness, bushwalking, gardening, horse riding and supervised excursions among the available options. Personalised aftercare planning helps guests prepare for the transition home, with ongoing individual sessions, online groups and connections to suitable community recovery services available following residential treatment.

Reviews from Guests
My time at Southern Highlands Addiction Retreat (SHAR) was genuinely life-changing. I arrived needing space, structure, and support to rebuild, and I left with three solid months of sobriety — something I’ll always be grateful for. That sobriety was critical, but SHAR offered far more than that. The counsellors and staff are outstanding. They are consistently caring, supportive, and highly professional, without ever feeling clinical or detached. There’s real maturity in their approach — honest conversations, clear boundaries, accountability, and genuine empathy. More than helping me stay sober, they helped me discover who I am underneath the weight of addiction, which has been just as important. The overall environment supports recovery in every way. The food is excellent, the facilities are top-class, the weekly outings and activities are engaging, and the course content is practical, relevant, and well delivered. The gym is also a standout and clearly valued by many residents. SHAR provides structure, community, and a truly therapeutic setting. For me, it wasn’t just a place to regain sobriety — it was a place to reset, reflect, and start rebuilding properly. I’m deeply grateful for the experience and the people who make SHAR what it is.
I recently attended Southern Highlands Addiction Retreat (SHAR) and had a really positive experience. The facilities are first-class, set right in the heart of the beautiful Guula Ngurra National Park. The location itself plays a huge part in the experience, with the support staff making full use of the surroundings — regular hikes to nearby lookouts and outdoor activities added a lot of value to the overall program. The psych-education component is a well-structured 12-week program delivered by a team of therapists who bring a great mix of professional expertise and real lived experience. One of the standout aspects for me was having two individual therapy sessions each week, which really helped to tailor the recovery journey to my personal needs. The program strikes a good balance between focused recovery work, personal growth, and enough free time to start building healthy routines and lifestyle habits. Overall, SHAR provides a supportive and enriching environment for anyone serious about making lasting change.
The most beautiful place for recovery, learnt more than I thought possible. Staff are amazing! I came here with not much hope for myself and I am leaving feeling optimistic for my future, would highly recommend this to anyone who truely wants to change and recover from addiction
