About The Khong Rivers Rehab Centre

The Khong Rivers Rehab Centre is a residential addiction and mental health treatment facility in the peaceful northeastern province of Bueng Kan, Thailand. Founded in 2024, the centre supports adults experiencing alcohol or drug addiction, trauma, anxiety, depression, stress and co-occurring mental health concerns. Detox, residential care and retreat-style programmes are available within a private, restorative setting. Treatment combines evidence-based methods with holistic and Twelve-Step-informed recovery. Individual counselling, group sessions, family therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy and dialectical behaviour therapy help clients understand harmful patterns and develop practical coping skills. Care plans can also incorporate psychoeducation, mindfulness, yoga and recreational therapies according to each person's needs. Nature is central to daily life at The Khong Rivers. The rural setting includes extensive green space and opportunities for farming, gardening, hiking, biking and organised adventure outings. Care-farming activities encourage clients to build confidence, establish healthy routines and reconnect with a sense of purpose while spending meaningful time outdoors. Clients stay in private, air-conditioned rooms with en suite bathrooms and connected outdoor space. English- and Thai-language support, family involvement and an individualised treatment philosophy make the centre accessible to both local and international clients seeking focused recovery away from the pressures of everyday life.

Phu Langka National Park Protection Unit at Tham Naka (Naka Cave) offers a remarkable experience for those seeking natural beauty and cultural significance in Thailand's northeastern region. The ascent to the site involves a challenging trail with steep inclines, providing an opportunity for physical engagement while surrounded by verdant forests and panoramic mountain vistas. Upon reaching the cave, visitors are greeted by impressive rock formations resembling serpentine figures, evoking ancient Thai folklore and geological wonders. The park's protection unit maintains the area with diligence, ensuring environmental preservation and visitor safety through knowledgeable rangers who provide insightful guidance. This destination is highly recommended for nature enthusiasts and those interested in exploring Thailand's heritage. FYI it did seem mandatory to have a guide attend your hike which started at 500 tbh.

Naka cave is a great cave hike near Nakhon Phanom in Isan. I went here with Carrot as part of our Isan road trip and it was one of the most rewarding hikes we have done together. Naka Cave (or snake cave) is one of the natural wonders of Thailand and sits near the top of a mountain in Phu Lanka National park. Inside the cave are fascinating large snake head like rock formations covered what looks like snake skin (see pictures). The hike to the cave is a 2 km long and quite steep climb up the mountain on a well maintained trail with several staircases. There are some beautiful rest stops on the way up with spectacular waterfalls and rock formations. Once you have seen the snake in the cave you should continue up to the top of the mountain for wonderful views of the surrounding landscapes.

A really enjoyable day out - well about 5 hours in all - was spent under the professional guidance of our guide Ham (Thai language only) at the Naga Caves and hill top stupa. We walked 8km in total, at a fairly leisurely pace, it’s a relatively easy walk although some of the steps (almost ladders) up and down might be challenging for those who are either unfit or with a fear of heights. The caves are not exactly caves, more a series of walkways, crevasses and overhangs but hey, that’s splitting hairs and probably to a degree, somewhat lost in translation. The rock formations are quite amazing and yes, some of them really do take on the form of snakes, skulls and the like. The views are amazing….and need to be experienced in person. The cost was 100 baht for foreigners and 50 baht for Thai locals, great value although your guide needs to be tipped too, as this is how they make their living (they are not paid a salary by the Govt). I personally think that more needs to be done at the hill top (about 1000 ft) to clear old concrete carbuncles from the area and preserve what’s left of the natural rock formations, which are rapidly disappearing with the wear and tear of tourist footfall. All in all though a really good day out and a memorable experiences. If I could, I’d give it 4.5 out of 5, but I can’t.
